Meet Day Ideas For Success

You want to do everything right before your race so you are appropriately prepared?  Then follow the list of Top Things To Do To Prepare For A Meet.

1.  Sleep:  The most important night of sleep before a race is TWO nights before.   Try getting to bed a little earlier on Thursday night.  Friday is important as well but sometimes it is more about the time you get up on Saturday than anything else.  Try to wake up earlier than you would probably want, like 8:00 am.   This keeps your body on a schedule and avoids that “sluggish” feeling when you’ve stayed in bed too long.   Also, getting up by 8:00 helps you get a good breakfast in and on a better schedule.  You can certainly rest and even nap after waking up and eating.

2. Eating:  Try to stay on a routine with what you eat and when you eat but make minor adjustments so that your last big meal is about 3-4 hours before your race.  Fruit, bagels w/peanut butter, pancakes, waffles, french toast, pb&j, etc. are all good options.  Try to avoid too much dairy but milk on cereal is typically fine.   Snacks like graham crackers, pretzels, fruit, etc. can be eaten up to about 1 hour before race time.

3.  Hydrating:  Try drinking water only before races and save the sports drinks until after the race.  Be sure you are drinking enough.  Even when you are drinking enough – DRINK MORE!

4.  Sit:  As much as you can before a race, conserve your energy.  Sit down and relax as much as possible.

5.  Warm-up:  The team will warm-up about 50-60 minutes before their race.  Be sure you are back at our “team camp” at least 1 hour before the race to complete our team warm-up.  photo 5

6.  Goals:  Set some goals for yourself each and every meet.  Goals could be related to time, place, order on the team, mile splits, etc.   These are all goals that can be measured. Goals such as “try my best” and “work hard” are typically not effective.   If you need help, talk to one of the coaches.

7.  Look FAST:  Our team looks classy and FAST when we all look like a team.  Wear cross country apparel only.   2015 team shirts should be worn to each and every meet.

8.  SNACKS:  Bring healthy snacks for before and after the race.   Cross country meets are long days and there is nothing worse than being hungry at one.   Be sure you have what your body needs for both before and after the race.

9.  Be prepared:  Get your meet bag packed the night before.   Scrambling around the morning of the race to find your lucky socks is no fun.  Get packed the night before and enjoy the morning of the race a lot more.  Things to make sure you have laid out: uniform, team shirt, warm-ups, spikes, socks, sports bra, training shoes, watch, bag, goals, snacks/packed meal, water (try freezing it), and sports drink (try freezing it).

10.  Prepare for anything:  Conditions often change so have these few extra things in your bag just in case:  extra socks, long sleeve shirt, gloves, hat, trash bag (protection from rain)
