After winning a phenomenal third straight State Championship last weekend, Centerville Girls Cross Country took to the road this past Saturday to compete at the NXR – Nike Midwest Regional Meet on the pristine Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.  Thirty-three of the strongest cross country teams from the Midwest region, comprising Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio, were on hand to complete for the ultimate cross-country experience–the opportunity to race at Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) in Portland, Oregon in the first weekend of December.  The top two teams from Saturday’s race would advance automatically, and the third and fourth place finishers would have to wait and hope for one of the four at large bids in total handed out by Nike over the next few weeks.  CGXC had trained hard and were well prepared to give it their all yesterday for a return trip to NXN to compete for the definitive title of fastest team in the nation.

It was another beautiful autumn day of racing, and our Lady Elks ran with grit and determination, leaving it all on the course and earning a fifth place finish at this highly competitive meet.  While the team finished strong together, unfortunately, they fell short of their final goal this season…….Nike Cross Nationals just wasn’t in the cards this year.   But this team of runners showed their strength in numbers, with three girls breaking 19 minutes, and the scoring pack finishing within only 52 seconds of each other.  Final race times for CGXC were as follows:

Grace Kilroy 18:17
Savannah Lowe 18:54
Rachel Whitehead 18:54
Kerri Walsh 19:00
Kelli Walsh 19:09
Dalia Einstein 19:29
Sophie Hippenmeyer 20:06

CGXC runners also competed in the Girls Open Invitational Race, held just before the Championship Race, and it was a day of breaking barriers for these ladies, as three more CGXC runners entered the Under-20-Minute club, ending their season with giant PRs.  The future certainly looks bright for Centerville Cross Country!  Finishing times for the runners in the Girls Open Invitational Race were as follows:

 Sydney Khosla 19:17
Anna Bostwick 19:47
Drea Scofield 19:53
Kylie Boggs 19:58
Laura Drew 20:20
Megan Kafka 21:11
Katie Lynch 21:11
Megan Knauer 21:38

What a fantastic season for this young team!  It has been a joy to watch these athletes compete week after week and push themselves to be their very best.  Hold your heads high, ladies! You have made us all very proud! #EPND
