Team Positions

There are 2 different positions each athlete can earn on the team each week – Varsity or Junior Varsity (JV). Early in the season, our athletes will complete a 2 mile time trial to determine which runners will compete in the Varsity and JV races our first meet. Once meets begin, race results will determine who has earned a Varsity or JV position for each meet.

Varsity Position

The top 10 finishers in our 2 mile time trial will earn a Varsity position for the first meet.

To run in the varsity race, the athlete must practice with the team all days of that week with the only exceptions being family emergencies, scheduled medical appts not d/t acute illness and conflicting academic responsibilities. Failure to clearly communicate excepted absences d/t any of the aforementioned reasons prior to the start of practice time will count against the athlete’s opportunity to race.

JV Position

The remaining finishers of our 2 mile time will earn a JV position for our first meet.

To run in the JV race, the athlete must practice with the team at least 4 days of the week, to include the Friday before a Saturday race, with the only exceptions being family emergencies, scheduled medical appts not d/t acute illness and conflicting academic responsibilities. Failure to clearly communicate excepted absences d/t any of the aforementioned reasons prior to the start of practice time will count against the athlete’s opportunity to race.

Athletes in a JV position may earn a Varsity position during the season by finishing in our top 10 runners at a XC meet.

Earning a Varsity Letter

There are a few ways an athlete can earn a varsity letter by the end of the XC season.

  1. Finish in CGXC’s top 10 in at least half of our time trials and XC meets (4-5 depending on season schedule) in which Varsity and JV athletes compete starting from our first time trial through GWOC.
  2. Race on a Regional qualifying team at Districts
  3. Race on a State qualifying team at Regionals
  4. Race in the State XC meet
