CHS Athletic Department Requirements: (2024 updates pending)
*Academic Eligibility – our runners are student athletes, student comes first.
*Athletic Department Forms – for 2023, there were five forms (see below) to be submitted to the Athletic Department before an athlete could participate in regular season practices. For 2024, CHS may be moving to a digital forms system before this coming fall so please stay UpToDate on their requirements via the Centerville athletics website.
- Athletic OHSAA Physical Form (completed once per year – new physical needed if last completed before 11/2022)
- Code of Conduct
- Concussion Form
- Emergency Medical Authorization Form
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest Form and Video
*Online OHSAA “meeting” – for 2023, families needed to watch a video and complete a google form.
*Pay to Participate Fee – **THIS IS NOT PART OF THE TEAM FEES** This fee is accessed to your child’s Home Access Center (HAC) account and it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to check his/her student’s account and pay the fee accordingly. These fees are paid directly to Centerville City Schools and should not be paid to the athletic department, sport/program or coaches. It can be paid online or via telephone by calling the CHS bookkeeper at 937-439-3572.
CGXC Team Requirements: Updated for 2024!
*Respectful, Positive Attitude! – This is first on our list for a reason. XC is a physically challenging and mentally grueling sport so coming to practice and races with a respectful and positive attitude each day will go a long way, not only for you but for the whole team! No athlete will be cut based on athletic ability but coaches will not tolerate disrespect, shown to coaching staff or to our athletes.
*CGXC Contract – above and beyond a respectful and positive attitude, every athlete is required to read through and agree with the CGXC Contract before they may participate in any team activities.
*Registration – coaches request each athlete complete the Google Form Registration for this upcoming season
*Communication – All registered athletes will be added to the ParentSquare 2024 CGXC Group for communication purposes. ParentSquare links to each CHS athlete’s StudentSquare account so all athlete’s are responsible for downloading the StudentSquare APP to their phones and turning on notifications and ensuring to check their texts/emails to stay informed of XC schedule changes/updates. Instructions on doing so can be found HERE.
*Team Fees – there are a few fees that we ask each athlete’s family to cover to help support things like our end of season banquet and weekly team dinners. There are a couple of optional fees that families may consider as well. Coaching staff will send out a team fee form via ParentSquare.
*Centerville Washington Park District Athletic Release Agreement – one of our practice locations each season is Rosewood Park. Each athlete and parent needs to sign this agreement in order for our girls to practice at this park.
*Shoes – a new pair of running shoes is essential for each XC season. Athletes can visit one of our local running stores like Up and Running or Runner’s Plus to get “fit” for shoes – a good idea, especially if your athlete has never had this done before or if she has outgrown her previous shoes. Walking around in new shoes for a few days to break them in before running in them is highly encouraged.
*Watch – a wrist watch with a stopwatch function will be VERY helpful at practices. GPS watches can be used at practices and technically may be worn during races if the GPS function is turned off. CGXC runners will not be allowed to wear any type of watch during races as we are most concerned with each runner giving her best effort and her finishing place vs time. Example of off-brand watches on Amazon – HERE.
*Water bottle – athletes MUST stay hydrated to safely practice and compete with the team. Some athletes may do multiple runs per week >45min and should come prepared with additional means of refueling like liquid IV/DripDrop or similar products. Examples of applicable products – HERE.
*Spikes (optional but HIGHLY recommended especially for Varsity and top JV athletes) – Spikes are a racing shoe worn only during competition. Spikes are not only lighter to run in but also help with traction and give the athlete a strong psychological boost. They are a wonderful asset to ANY XC runner but we would encourage athletes to make a firm commitment to XC before purchasing a $75+ pair of shoes. In most cases, a pair of spikes can last two XC seasons. Like with running shoes, breaking in a new pair of spikes is encouraged a few days before racing in them. The biggest thing is to make sure you are getting a XC/distance spike vs a sprinter/jumper spike. One way to ensure you are getting the proper kind of spikes is to visit one of our local runner’s shops and one of their knowledgeable staff members can help you find the perfect fit for your needs! You could make it an all in one trip for new running shoes and spikes! 🙂
